Cricket, Bob Sledding, Surfing and Hockey

12s win in nail biter, 14s in a canter, two centuries in inter-district cricket / Local surfer trials for Australian Bob Sled team / Surfing – it’s all in the Allum family / Women’s Hockey forms South East Premier League / Cricket camps for boys and girls

12s win in nail biter, 14s in a canter, two centuries in inter-district cricket

In the Cawsey Shield (under 12) game against Newcastle, Sutherland batted first to score 5 for 162 in the allotted 50 overs. With a great captain’s knock E Grinham top scored with 69 while J Wood was run out for 30. In a real nail biter the Sutherland bowlers and fielders maintained the pressure to leave Newcastle 3 runs short of victory at 8 for 159 after 50 overs. In a tremendous all round team performance Sutherland used 11 bowlers seven of whom took a wicket each (Saunders, Smith, Williams, Grinham, McPhee, Wood and Burg) while Wood completed a good all round performance to effect a run out.

Sutherland’s Moore Shield team (under 14s) had a comprehensive win over South Eastern by nine wickets after their opponents were rolled for 48 in the 40th over. Almond (5/8) and Morton (3/8) were the principal destroyers for the Shire team.

In the Weblin Shield, Newcastle were dismissed for 177 with Smith (3/28) and Mullaly (3/33) being the main destroyers for Sutherland. Smith then opened the batting and dominated the innings to score 126 before being dismissed with the total only on 160.  Thorogood (66no) and Thomas (35no) saw Sutherland safely pass Newcastle’s score before going on to reach 3 for 260 at the end of the allocated 60 overs.

The 16s participated in another nail biter. After captain Andersson’s brilliant 117, Sutherland finished with 173 after 60 overs. At 1 for 103, Illawarra looked like passing Sutherland’s score easily but then a fall of 4 wickets including two run outs by Rice put Sutherland back in the game. However, Illawarra’s lower order batsmen held the innings together to pass Sutherland’s score in the 59th over for the loss of 6 wickets.

After two rounds, Sutherland’s only undefeated team is in the Gee Shield (under 13s). Overall results of round 2 follow:

Creak Shield (Under 11): North Shore 4 for 115 defeated Sutherland 9 for 114 (B Curtis 30)
Cawsey Shield (Under 12): Sutherland 5 for 162 (E Grinham 69) defeated Newcastle 8 for 159.

lost to Illawarra 6 for 175 (M McCrae 69)

Wanda surfer Zane Campbell left on Friday 9th November for a trial with the Australian bobsledding team in Austria. Training began on Monday 12th and Zane arrives back in Sydney on the 19th November.

Trials for the Olympic team have been scheduled for December in Melbourne. If Zane does well at trials, he has a chance to make one of the 3 teams (1 team of 4 and 2 teams of 2) to the Olympics which is next in Quebec and the World Cups in February.
Zane will be training at the Iglis international training centre, Austria and will be the break man for Joel. Whilst in Austria he will be heading down the mountain 20 times at very fast speeds. (from www.wandasurfclub.com)
