Sutherland battles weather as well as opponents in Senior Cricket Shields

It was not only the Chappell-Hadlee trophy match between Australia and New Zealand last Sunday that was stopped due to rain. Two out of three Round 3 matches involving local representative teams in Cricket NSW’s senior inter-district shields were also not able to be completed due to the weather.

In the Durham Shield (under 19), Sutherland won the toss and decided to bat against Nepean. Opener C McCrae played a lone hand for Sutherland scoring 50 before being the last man out in his team’s total of 119 in 50 overs. The only other Sutherland batsman to reach double figures was Jenkins with 13. Nepean’s innings only lasted 5 overs for 0/14 before the rain set in and forced a drawn match. While Sutherland is running 5th in the 6 team competition wins in the last two rounds could see it through to the play-offs. Sutherland plays George’s River St George (4th) at Cahill oval in round 4 on 13th January and Fairfield Liverpool (6th) at Caringbah in round 5 on 20th January.

Sutherland has two teams in the Martin Shield (no age limit). In Sutherland 1 team’s game, their opponents Canterbury Wests won the toss and batted first to score 164 off 45.3 overs. Canterbury had been travelling well at 3/116 until Sutherland’s bowlers got on top. Main destroyer for Sutherland was C Hollister who took 4 wickets for 4 runs off 5 overs. Other wicket takers were Emerton’s 2/37, Parker’s 2/17, McMahon’s 1/17 and Roberts with 1/34. Despite the win Sutherland 1 misses out on the quarter final play-offs as it finished 3rd in its 4 team pool of division 1 of the 4 division competition.

Sutherland’s other Martin Shield team in Division 2 had its game washed out against Bankstown.  This draw resulted in Sutherland 2 qualifying for the quarter finals in 2008 as it came second in its pool.
