Sharks feed on Berries in 13s and 14s

The well performed Sutherland Sharks under 13 and 14 teams were far too strong for the West Sydney Berries in last weekend’s Premier Youth League games. Both teams are in the top four after the 13s won 3 nil and the 14s prevailed by 2 nil. The 16s also picked up a win but the 18s and 15s had close losses.

Results of last week’s round were:
Under 18: Sutherland lost 2 – 1
Under 16: Sutherland won 2 – 1
Under 15: Sutherland lost 1 nil
Under 14: Sutherland won 2 nil
Under 13: Sutherland won 3 nil

Comets too bright for Sharks in WABL

On the weekend the Sharks hosted the Sydney Comets in a rematch of last year’s grand final. From the outset it looked as though the Sharks would simply have their way with them as they went to an early lead.

But as the half stretched out the Comets stayed in contention thanks largely to some quality outside shooting from their guards and the hussle of their big men.

While entering the third period with a small lead, the Sharks failed to continue the same momentum as the Comets fought back and took control of the game with a small lead going into the fourth.

In this period both teams showed huge efforts, on the Sharks BJ Carter (17pts) and Blake Henricks (17pts) both left their mark but even these efforts along with some late game heroics by Ben Conguista,  would not be enough to take back control of the game as the Comets closed the Sharks out 95-91 handing Sutherland their first home loss of the season.

The juggernaut that has swept all before them this year, the Sydney Comets ABA women’s team, visited the Shire on Saturday night to take on the Sharks in what was only the Sharks second home game.

The Sharks have been notoriously slow starters this season and the ANZAC break had given the coaches some time to work on this. The adjustments paid off and for a rare time this season the Sharks led at the first break 16/15. The second quarter was just as evenly poised with both teams making each other pay for even the slightest error. This was shown by a lapse in the last 5 seconds of the half that gave the Comets a 40/34 lead at the long break.

Sydney made the adjustments in regard to the Sharks pressure defence at half time but the Sharks did not do the same. A 13 turnover to 2 second half was the difference with the experience of the Comets team, stacked with players of WNBL and international experience, outperforming the young Sharks in the pressure situations.

The third quarter is not known as  the ‘championship’ quarter for no reason and the Comets held the Sharks to only 7 points while netting 19 of their own. It was obvious that Comets had come with a big game plan to attempt to nullify the 195cm Marianna Tolo but this allowed for the Sharks guards to contribute more than usual. The Nicholson sisters were the best at the offensive end for the Sharks – Lauren 16 pts and Jacki 15 pts with Marianna Tolo 12 pts being the only other Shark in double figures. The final score was 82/57 in favour of the Comets, in a game that the Shire ladies had a lot to be proud of.

The Sharks team will be away again next weekend to Maitland where they will come up against current Opals Olympic squad member Nat Porter and 2008 ACUVUE Sydney Uni Flames teammate Mikaela Dombkins.
