Basketball Australia has announced the players selected into the Australian Gems and Emus squads to prepare for the 2009 FIBA Under 19 World Championships. Sutherland’s Kate Gaze and Michele Joy have made the squad.
The Women’s tournament will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 23 July – 2nd August 2009 and in preparation the squad will attend a training camp from 5th – 8th March.
The Gems will be led by Australian Institute of Sport Women’s coach Dean Kinsman with two WNBL coaches in the Assistant Coach positions; Dandenong Rangers head coach Dale Waters and Canberra Capitals assistant coach Sandy Tomley.
A number of players in the squad already have played at an international level, gaining experience at the 2008 FIBA Oceania Championship and at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in January, where they won Gold Medals.

More Sutherland junior cricketers show form
In the just completed round of Sutherland junior cricket there were a number of outstanding forms. As reported last week Jamie Brown scored 100 not out for Illawong Menai 14A and this remained the top score of the round. Illawong Menai’s opponents, Gymea Bay, looked set to overtake Illawong’s score of 212 on day 2 with opener Ethan Grinham scoring 72, but Illawong’s Sam Cooke then took 4 for 28 to cause a late order collapse to have Gymea Bay falling short on 170.
Second best score of the round as reported last week was 89no from Engadine 14A’s Jonathon Haslam; followed by 83 not out from Engadine 12C’s Matt Wright with 83 not out scored on day 2. Overall twenty players scored 50 runs or better for the round.
As reported last week Engadine 16C’s Scott Boynton (6/15), Miranda 14B’s Sean Anderson (5/6) and Bosco 14A’s Ben Issa (5/17) starred with the ball on day 1. Hayden Smith was added to the honour list on day 2 taking 5/27 off 12 overs for Engadine 14A against St Patrick’s 14A. Smith’s performance enabled his side to restrict St Patrick’s to 9/196 off 60 overs short of Engadine’s 4/223 on day 1.

Sutherland’s Brendan Gan celebrates Sydney FC Youth League Title
Sydney FC has taken out the inaugural National Youth League title by defeating Adelaide 2 nil in the grand final last Saturday. Former Sutherland Sharks star, Brendan Gan, had returned to the Youth League in the last few weeks after completing commitments with the senior side.
No doubt the victory will go some way to removing the disappointments of the senior side this season. Gan and some of his fellow youth league team mates had been promoted to the senior side late in the season to try to resurrect the first grade campaign but the top side fell short of the semis.
