Sutherland stung by Spiders in Waratah Basketball

In a major upset the 3rd placed Sutherland Sharks WBL men’s team was convincingly defeated 91 – 79 by the 7th placed Hornsby Spiders last weekend.  The Spiders led 50 – 40 at the main break. They then came out blazing in the third quarter to score 26 – 8 and have an unassailable lead by76 – 48. Although the Sharks regained some pride winning the final term by 31 – 15 it was too late.

Top scorers for the Sharks were Rod Proctor (20), Steve Hall (14), Brendan Gleeson (11) and Kieran Gleeson (10).

The Sharks women also lost by 12 points to the Spiders but this was not unexpected as the Spiders are running second compared to the Sharks 9th. The Spiders took the first quarter 16 – 7 and were never headed but led by Merle Hall the Sharks  won the second quarter to only trail by 27 – 23 at the main break. However, the Spiders regained the ascendency in the third quarter by 18 – 10 to lead by 45 – 33 going into the final term. The last quarter saw 17 points for each team with the Spiders winning by 62 – 50.  Merle Hall again top scored for the Sharks with 24 points with next best being Melinda Bartlett with 9.
