Do or die game for Sutherland junior cricket in Gee Shield

Sutherland’s Gee Shield (under 13) team has the best chance of qualifying for Cricket NSW’s inter-district shields semi-finals. It currently leads Division 3 on quotient from Central Coast. However, the two teams clash next Sunday December 9 at Pat Morley Oval (Central Coast) with the winner qualifying for the play-offs.

The other Sutherland team with an outside chance of making the play-offs is the Moore Shield (under 14s) team. However, to qualify Sutherland would have to rely on lowly Bankstown (16th overall) defeating Division 1 leader, Fairfield Liverpool. As Sutherland’s last game is against Illawarra (17th overall) at Heathcote it would be expected to win.

Outstanding performances for Sutherland in the round came from:
• A Roberts in the under 11s who scored 41 and took 3/11 in Sutherland’s win over Bankstown
• B Dwarshuis scored 63 and N Panich took 4 wickets for 5 runs in the under 14s convincing win also over Bankstown
• A Thorogood scored 55 in Sutherland’s loss to Parramatta in the under 15s.

Results of round 4 last weekend were as follows:

Creak Shield (under 11):
Sutherland 7/140 (N Merciante49, A Roberts 41) defeated Bankstown all out for 103 (J Hess 3/26 and A Roberts 3/11). The Creak Shield team is 3rd in Div 3 and 9th overall in the competition.

Cawsey Shield (under 12):
Sutherland 92 lost to Camden 6/93. Sutherland is currently 9th overall in the competition and 4th in Division 3.

Gee Shield (under 13):
Sutherland 3/112 (J Brown 34, H Smith 43) defeated Hornsby Ku-ring-gai 110 (H McLean 4/6). Sutherland is 4th overall and leads Division 3 from Central Coast on better quotient.

Moore Shield (under 14):
Sutherland 7/163 (B Dwarshuis 63, J D’Imperio 45, H Morton 30) defeated Bankstown 79 (N Panich 4/5) and 5/34.  As a result of the win Sutherland is 3rd overall but 2nd in Div 1 behind Fairfield Liverpool.

Weblin Shield (under 15):
Sutherland 173 (A Thorogood 55, B McLean 41) lost to Parramatta 6/177. With only one win  from 4 games Sutherland’s team is out of semis race.

Watson Shield (under 16):
Sutherland 150 lost to South Eastern 183. With this loss Sutherland has only one win from four games and are also out of play-off contention.

Girls’ summer cricket camp

The NSW Department of Arts, Sport and Recreation in conjunction with Cricket NSW & ACT Cricket will hold a cricket camp for girls from across country NSW and the ACT in the next school holidays. The 2008 camp is set for January 14th – 17th and will again be held at Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre, which is located 25kms east of Wagga Wagga, on the Sturt Highway. While the focus is on country players the camps have accepted metropolitan based players in the past.

Copies of the enrolment form can be found on the department’s website at the following address: http://www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/borambola/program.asp?Code=838 or alternatively, please contact the office by telephoning (02) 6928 4300 to have additional copies posted or emailed.

This is a fantastic opportunity for girls to improve their cricket skills with instruction provided by Cricket NSW and Cricket ACT coaches and players from the NSW Breaker’s Women’s team. The camp is catering for players of all levels of ability aged 10 to 17 years.

The organisers also have the capacity to support a small number of indigenous girls to attend the camp. These places will be offered through a selection process with the key selection criteria being that they must already be playing cricket. Forward any potential participant names to clarkem@dsr.nsw.gov.au.
