The Shire coffee festival is to be held at Peace Park, Sutherland from 10am – 4pm on Sunday July 11.
There will be great coffee and food, live music across two stages, entertainment in the park, and the Eton Street Arts and Crafts markets!

What we can learn from Industrial Disasters – IEAust

Presentation organised by Illawarra/Sutherland Regional Group, Institution of Engineers Australia.  Speaker: Leanne Treadwell, Principal Advisor, Hazard & Risk Management, BlueScope Steel

Leanne’s presentation will cover industrial disasters, including events such as Piper Alpha, Longford, Flixborough, Space Shuttle Columbia, BP Texas City, Manildra Ethanol Plant Port Kembla, as well as talk about the recent Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Design for safety,operability and maintainability as well as technical governance of operating facilities. Valuing safety and risk management systems and being mindful of the possibility of disaster is very relevant for everyone. Light refreshments will be served from 6.00 pm

Sky photos, Water and Women in Physics at Science Centre

Some of the most spectacular photographic images of the night sky are now on display at Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium, Squires Way Fairy Meadow (University of Wollongong, Innovation Campus). These photographs are part of a touring exhibition called “Winning Sky Photographs: The David Malin Awards 2009.
 

Our Water, Questacon’s latest travelling exhibition will open at the Wollongong Science Centre on August 7 as part of a two year tour. This comprises 28 hands-on exhibits designed to inform and encourage.

This year’s winner of the Women in Physics Lectureship is Professor Elizabeth Winstanley. Prof. Winstanley is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sheffield. Her research focuses on the physics of black holes and will form the basis of her Australian lectures. Entry is free but as seating is limited, bookings are essential.
