White Christmas and then some

Deck the decks with boughs of holly

Sorry for the reminder ... but we are just 11 months from Christmas!

The reason for the early notice is the considerable saving you could achieve by booking your next white Christmas holiday almost a year ahead if, by ”white'' you are thinking Antarctica.

The destination is becoming increasingly popular, especially now, since they are actually flying people into the Australian-inspired “blue ice airport''.

But it's yet far from common and doing the Antarctic in style aboard a classic-style cruise ship has a bit going for it.

By booking early through Cruiseco on their 700-passenger expedition vessel Discovery, you are looking at up to 15 per cent saving. This brings their 16-day Christmas package from Buenos Aires to Antarctica and Santiago down to an attractive $5195 pp twin share.

The ticket includes gourmet dining aboard ship, two hotel nights pre-cruise with a half-days sightseeing and another two nights and sightseeing post-cruise, airport/hotel/ship transfers, destination talks by onboard experts, at least two Antarctic landings with an experienced expedition team, and gratuities.

The holiday begins in Buenos Aires on December 17 with a flight to Ushuaia to board Discovery and the cruise to Drake Passage, six days in Antarctica including the South Shetlands, Antarctica Sound, Christmas Day at Paradise Island in the Lemaire Channel and Half Moon Island.

You also have the thrill of rounding Cape Horn, a cruise of the Beagle Channel and Strait of Magellan, a visit to Punta Arenas, and Santiago for two nights.

For full details, including prices for air to join the cruise, phone 1800 225 656.

All hands on (your very own) deck

It's more than a Sea Dream

If chartering your own yacht in the Mediterranean or Caribbean is the stuff of dreams only, you can now have the next best thing courtesy of SeaDream Yacht Club with  exclusive use of your own deck of staterooms in either of the luxury motor cruisers SeaDream I or SeaDream II.

Each ship has only three passenger decks of between 16 and 22 staterooms which translates roughly into 55 couples being attended by 95 crew!

The concept is finding favour with extended-family holiday groups, groups of friends and small corporate incentives.

There is also a bonus offer of a free stateroom with some bookings.

The Dream twins cruise the Med from May to October and the Caribbean from November to April. Their seven-night sailings include some of the most popular ports in the Mediterranean and Caribbean plus the bonus of some ports inaccessible to larger vessels.

Prices start from US$4333 per person twin-share for seven nights in the Caribbean and from US$4968 in the Mediterranean, plus the bonus free stateroom when booking exclusive use of a deck.
