THE SUN IN SAGITTARIUS
In Sagittarius, man seeks to put into working order what he experienced with great depths of feelings in Scorpio where the ideal was to merge with others, becoming more than oneself, identifying with the whole.
Ancient symbolism had Sagittarius represented by the Centaur, the mythological half man half horse, describing the ability to harness the power of the horse and put it to use. There is a third attribute, that of the bow and arrow referring to direction and purpose shooting upwards at a 45 degree angle gaining maximum mobilisation of energy. He may shoot at the stars but his feet remain firmly planted on the ground hence the keenness in looking after the body.
We find in Sagittarius, at its highest level, the servant of the community who responds to its needs by establishing workable order in the midst of the complexity of social and natural phenomena. The philosopher and metaphysician recognises all sorts of hidden connections and correlations between events whilst organised religion also comes under the banner of Sagittarius being a communal enterprise, powered by man’s yearning to feel collectively united.
Gemini, the polar opposite of Sagittarius we see language in its incipient stage related to the needs of the personality and absorbed from the environment. Words that are rooted in images of the living and in personal experience are built in order to grow whereas in Sagittarius there is a search for universal meanings conditioned by social experience. Gemini is our early and secondary education whereas Sagittarius is at tertiary level.
Negatively, we see the willingness to sacrifice anything personal for the good of the community which leads to the fanatic and the puritan with personal asceticism, whether deliberate or enforced leading to cruelty. |
