BJ Carter scores well as All Star night wows the fans
Parramatta Wildcats hosted the All Star Night last Saturday between the Parramatta Wildcats and an All Star team. The all Star team included Sutherland Sharks’ BJ Carter and Rod Proctor.
Parramatta Wildcats head coach Dave Reimer said it all after the game, when he modestly called the Wildcats "All-Star Night" a success. A virtual capacity crowd at the Auburn Basketball Stadium showed basketball was still alive and kicking in Sydney, in spite of the Sydney Spirit's ongoing troubles in drawing fans to this season's NBL competition.
For the record, the All-Star team won the feature game over the Wildcats 124-119, with all of the big-name players (in both teams) living up to expectations and leading the scoring on the night. Former Sydney Kings NBL squad members Luke Brennan (31 points), BJ Carter (28) and Blake Borgia (24) all showed their class to sit at the top of the All-Stars scoring stats, whilst Charles Bloemen exploded for an astonishing 41 points for the Wildcats, ahead of Goran Veg (25) and exciting newcomer Adi Causevic 16.
The three-point shooting contest was a personal triumph for Causevic, who scorched through the qualifying rounds before stunning ex-King and current Shark Carter in the final, hitting thirteen of his fifteen attempts to win the crown.
Reimer said "It was an outstanding night for the community. One of the highlights was seven year old singing sensations Ruby Carr and Adina Hertz dazzling the crowd with an unaccompanied duet of the Australian National Anthem. We were also thrilled to have former Kings NBL assistant coach Bill Tomlinson and current Sydney Spirit recruit Jason Smith on hand to support the event."
Gan’s Sydney young guns continue to fire
They were largely an unknown quantity a few weeks ago, but four rounds into the inaugural National Youth League season Sydney FC’s young guns have proven they are a force to be reckoned with. A key player in the Sydney squad is former Sutherland Sharks 20 year old Brendan Gan.

“We’ve gotten off to a good start,” said striker Sean Rooney after the young Sky Blues’ impressive away win over Perth. “We’re on top of the table, we’re undefeated, hopefully we can keep it up.”
After finding the net for the first time last week in FC’s round three win over Adelaide, Rooney collected a double yesterday against the Glory to help set up the 5-3 victory.
“It was a long trip, we knew it was going to be hard, it was hot weather, but we got the job done,” said the 19-year-old. “My aim is to score a goal in every game, so hopefully I can keep it up.”
Of concern to Sydney’s rivals would be the fact the side still has plenty of room for improvement.
“I’ve played with some of the boys before but until recently half of us have never played together,” Rooney explained. “Training can be tough because we can’t always get all the players together but we’re starting to gel as a group and things are looking good.”
This weekend Steve O’Connor’s side will again be on the road for a clash with the FC’s perennial enemies, the Melbourne Victory.
“It’s another big test for us. Melbourne hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts but they’re a tough side and we’ll have to be on our game,” said Rooney.
Unfortunately Brendan Gan picked up a yellow card in the 38th minute but coach Connor left him on to complete the game. The young Sky Blues will chase their fourth straight win when they take on the Victory at 4pm this Sunday (October 26) in the Southern capital.
