Outstanding performances in Sutherland Shire junior cricket
Some players have obviously not lost their touch in the holiday break for Sutherland Shire junior cricket. In the just completed first round back last weekend there were 4 centuries and ten players who took 5 wickets or more in an innings.
Leading the batsmen was Bosco 14E’s Chris Jago who scored 147 against Como Jannali. Next were two Illawong 14A batsmen Jamie Brown with 119 and Hayden McLean with 117 in their team’s massive 6/291 against Engadine (all out for 78). The other century maker of the round was Gymea Bay 16C’s Max Mannix with 103 against Bosco.
Unluckiest batsman of the round was Miranda 14C’s Brendan Okey with 96 not out when the team’s 50 overs were up against Illawong Menai. His team’s 7/182 was too much, however, for their opponent’s 157 (all out) to take the match. Also unlucky not to make triple figures were Gymea Bay 12B’s Dane Fisher and Engadine 16A’s Ryan Almond who both scored 90.
Caringbah 16C’s Liam Garland had the best bowling performance of the round taking 7 wickets for five runs against Engadine. Garland’s bowling caused a late innings collapse by Engadine to enable Caringbah to steal the match by 127 to 116.
Next best bowling was from Ryan Agar who took 6 for 13 for St Patrick’s 14A against Como Jannali in their second innings. St Patrick’s won the match outright by scoring 138 and 0/1 and dismissing Como for 61 and 77. Ryan Agar had taken 2 for 7 in Como Jannali’s first innings as well as his 6 wickets in the second innings.
Eight bowlers took 5 wickets in an innings in the round. These were Caringbah 16B’s Ned Stelzer (5/5), Miranda 14B’s Luke Wright (5/6), Engadine 8A1’s Reece Kelly (5/7), Caringbah 16D’s Beclan Gilkes (5/7), Gymea Bay 16B’s Michael Taplin (5/8), Caringbah 14D’s Robert Brady (5/8), Caringbah 14B’s Saty Kar (5/9) and Caringbah 16B’s Taylor Burman (5/10).

Sutherland’s Gan scores as Sydney juniors blast past Newcastle
Sutherland’s Brendan Gan has scored as Sydney FC has secured the inaugural National Youth League premiership, and with it, a place in the season decider. Sydney’s youth team scored an emphatic 7-1 win over the Newcastle Jets at Adamstown Oval on Saturday evening. After playing in Sydney FC’s senior side for the last few rounds Gan and a number of other young rising stars have returned to help the Youth team secure the first title.
Newcastle shocked Sydney when James Virgili scored in the sixth minute. This sparked the young blues into action. By half time Sydney had well and truly reversed the early deficit, with a 35th minute own goal and finishes from rising stars, Chris Payne, Kofi Danning, Rhyan Grant and Sam Munro putting the game completely beyond Newcastle’s reach with 45 minutes still to play.
In the second stanza Brendan Gan and Zach Cairncross continued the onslaught, making it a tough night for the struggling Jets and sending an ominous warning to Sydney’s rivals for the first ever Youth League crown.
In their last outing before the grand final the junior Blues face off against the Central Coast Mariners at 5pm next Saturday at Plum Park, near Gosford.
Newcastle Jets 1 (Virgili 6’) lost to Sydney FC 7 (Payne 16’, Danning 19’, Grant 23’, Regan 35’OG, Munro 42’, Gan 77’, Cairncross 84’)
